i’m a newbie to linux, i’m most familiar to the windows series, and own vista on my pc!
anything along the lines of games, media players. or anything at all
i have ubuntu 8.0.4 desktop edition installed and wifi wont work. i turn it on and nothing happens. it acts like there is no wirless card. what should i do to get wifi up and running. also i dont know what wirless card is installed its the original wirless card that i got when i bought the laptop.
Lets say i built a new computer. But i didn’t install windows or anything. And i had an Ubuntu Cd lying around, would it work?
I’m planning on trying a different OS besides Windows and I’m currently downloading Ubuntu Ultimate 1.4 because I know that it’s the only OS out there that is PC and MAC systems compatible, but it’s a direct iso image and the provider doesn’t include a read me file or something like that. I’m worried that I might never be able to install it if it asks for a cd key or something like that.
I love Vista and I like Ubuntu Compiz Eye Candy Effects stuffs. Any way to add them to my Vista?

I have a Linux server with Debian etch distribution.
I want to use mod-auth-mysql, but the libapache2-mod-auth-mysql package is only for sarge, lenny and sid distributions.
Is there a safe way to use one of them?
If not is there any alternative?

i’m looking for a groupware software that i can implement in my office. there are about 50 people working there, i need email, calendaring, messaging, colaboration feature. more importantly i need the ones that are free. i’m running suse 10.0 goldmaster.
please give some explanation on:
1. why do you think your choice is the best compared to other
groupwares?
2. does it come with RPM modules or debian one?
PS: on e-mail client, we use either thunderbird or evolution

I just installed Ubuntu tonight and I was wondering if there is a way to view my windows files from within Ubuntu? Also I need to transfer a file from Windows to Ubuntu in order to set up my modem, so how can I do this without a flash drive or CD?

I’m a newbie to linux and like to switch to the most suitable free Linux Operating System for general user? What I’m looking for:
1) ease of use – need not be for geeks – roughly the level of an average Windows XP home user;
2) boot-up disc under 1 Cd-rom and easy to set-up
3) must be totally free! (very impt!)
4) ability to run/support multilingual programs (I’m learning a foreign language)
5) doesn’t hog too much system resource
I’ve been recommended to some distributions like Debian but it appears there are many subdistributions under it. Is Simplymepris any good? Would be most appreciative if one can come up with some alternative suggestions.
