Which free linux distro should i use for home computing as photo manipulation, gaming and watching films?
My computer is old : 1,8ghz p4 512mb ram 40gb hdd plus ati radeon 9000. I tried fedora: a lot of packages excluded, tried debian: too old components/packages, tried frugalware: driver problems, and missing packages. I prefer kde.
Why is ubuntu so popular when Suse is much more user friendly?
I realize that Ubuntu is a fast growing distro but what I do not understand is why is it such a buzz word. What is it that it can down that a standard version of Debian cannot do. I work for Dell and we recently started selling ubuntu ready hardware and the company plans on marketing it as the definitive consumer linux distro. We also sell Red hat and suse but we only market them towards business customers.
Novell and Microsofts business plans have no impact on this question. We cannot see the future and that agreement may very well bridge the gap on many issues. I suspect that the agreement will benifit Novell more then it will microsoft.
This question is about which OS is more user friendly. Not which is more interested in self segregating the two operating system because of some sort of loyalty to a company.
Can I make a boot CD that can boot Xandros (Linux) on an ext3 partition just by booting the CD?
I have been triple-booting XP Pro, XP Pro 64 bit, and Xandros on my machine, using Xandros’ LILO boot loader. In order to successfully install Vista Ultimate 64 bit I had to restore the master boot record to the XP state and remove LILO, and if I try to restore Xandros’ LILO, the Vista operating system does not work correctly and gives me “corrupt disk” messages. I cannot use Acronis Operating System Selector on this machine. I was able to still boot my Xandros by using a boot disk called “Ultimate Boot” and the open source boot program called “GAG”, but the process was rather convoluted, requiring multiple steps. Xandros is a commercial Linux distribution based on Debian, and I really like it because it is very easy to use for a LInux system and does not require you to be a full-time Linux geek to use it. For a very modest price you get an entire operating system including just about all the software you need for day-to-day tasks. There are also free Linux distros that offer this.

Can using the Ubuntu partition software guarentee keeping of all files when shrinking a partition?
While obviously I wouldn’t perform this without backing up files I can’t afford to lose, would setting up Ubuntu over Windows by shrinking my unpartitioned drive guarantee safety of the original files, or does it have a high (more than 3%) failure rate?
And yes, I’m aware I misspelled guarantee.
